A story in today's Oak Ridger describes the problems the city is having with the owner of the Applewood Apartments to fix up his property. Joe Levitt, who is also a Knoxville lawyer, is threatening a federal lawsuit to prevent the city from inspecting his buildings for health and safety violations. The new programs that he opposes are designed to help clean up deteriorating properties in targeted neighborhoods and to make landlords more responsible for the use of their properties.
This is the economic/housing side of the crime fighting that needs to happen in Highland View. Mayor Beehan was right to push for this program and he is right to push for its full implementation.
If Lawyer Levitt would live in his apartments until they are dealt with, that would make me a bit happier.
