Stan Mitchell brought out a good point in the "County Politics" thread: if folks are going to make accusations, it probably should be done under real names.

How many of you now posting to this forum, would continue to do so if required to use your real name? Do you think it would promote a bit more civil atmosphere if we all used our real names?
Sounds like a plan to me. Let's make the entire site exclusive to proper names only. Only to be viewed by registered members, of course.
Back at the Oak Ridger forum, when it was still under responsible adult supervision, I posted my name, email, etc. I started getting obscene email and harassing phone calls at home from one of the trolls on the forum.

While I understand that many people's names are known by those who post here, I see no compelling reason to use names on this forum.

This forum (by permitting anonymity) has provided a safe haven for people to spread lies, make accusations, demean one another and manipulate others. As one of its co-founders, you must be kidding if you expect us to take your query seriously.

Doc - I've never hidden and have never been harassed as you have - and I actually, you know, live in this town. Maybe you should think about why that is....

Well, trina, in your case, you limited your harassment of me to your posts on the forum. After you were banned temporarily, I noticed that it stopped. I hope this is not a sign that you intend to start again.

Oh, Doc. I see that you have yet to gain control of those internal urges you have for me. I am still here for you though when you need a shoulder to cry on - just not in the way that you'd prefer.
Get a life, trina.

If I have a vote it would be real names or known identities should be used, at least with all pilitical threads. I know there is a good argument fot not using real names too. A comprimise might be for the mods to know the certain identity of all members but allow posting under user names. I wish the mods wisdom.

I would support registration under one's own name, so that the moderators would know who was here, though I'm not sure why the info would be useful. I'm also unclear as to how the mods would know if the name given was real or bogus.

The issue here is (or should be) the behavior of each member, not their names. If someone is trolling, they can be banned regardless of their name. That has already happened here several times.
Most of us know who the "regular" posters are, even Modette and Big Brother. If things are getting too far out of hand, shutting down may be the best option. Just my view.
