Why would say that Outsider is not the "targeted" Oak Riger? I think this is a great place to start a second career and enjoy a time of your life away from the hassles of a larger city and colder climates. With or without a senior center.
Actually, Outsider said that he was not in the targeted demographic. I think what he was saying is that there has been a lot of discussion of getting younger families into town, those who might find a job at the Labs and who have kids in school perhaps, and that he is not that demographic.
The reason I think that we need more of that demographic is that we house 20,000 jobs at the federal facilities with most of those employees taking their salaries into other communities to spend. We should do a better job of getting those folks to live here and help our economy. It is really that simple.
Nothing simple about it, CN. No (law abiding) demographic should be dissuaded from considering our town. People want to believe that Oak Ridge is more expensive in housing, but not anymore. Try to find a house under 100k in west knoxville. Only if it is on wheels, baby. Even then, not out west. First time buyers, and young parents have a better chance of having a good home, great community and best shot at a public education if they choose Oak Ridge.

Who said anything about dissuasion? I am simply talking about recruiting not blocking.
While you might not be the demographic that we need more of, we can always use interested and interesting people.
Your statement is not exactly rolling out the red carpet for our new residents. My point is that if we are to grow, we need all (law abiding) demographics, not just the ones you hand pick.

And you are recruiting HOW? By being rude to the new residents and telling them they do not fit the right profile? I think Hitler tried that once. Didn't go so well for him....or his community.
Off the top of my head I can think of a few good reasons to have more seniors in Oak Ridge. Sales tax revenue would increase because seniors would be less likely to be trekking over to Turkey Creek. Belks is full of old people clothes so they could shop here. Maybe recruit a few senior golfers to support Centennial golf course (minus the cost of a few more port-o-potties so as not to offend ms. you know who). And seniors rarely make the crime rate increase. As for 95% seniors, I just don't see it happening. Schools are still too good for many education oriented parents who don't want to pay private tuition. But I welcome seniors, first timers and government employees all the same.

Since you missed it the first and second time, I will reiterate my answer. My answer is KISS. Be friendly and promote the great things about this town. Encourage new residents (old, young and tweeners).

I said that I do not believe that we will have 95% seniors due to the school system and parents wanting to live here for that reason. Would it be my preference? Maybe if I was old. What leads you to believe that we would have 95% seniors? You got some majic statistics you want to share? Do shed some light to this paranoia.
