"Obese people are often simply greedy and should not always be treated with pills, the head of the British Medical Association has said. Dr Hamish Meldrum believes an obsession with medical labels may be stopping overweight people addressing their own problems. He said the obesity epidemic is being mistakenly targeted with medical treatments and doctors' appointments."

Ah, yes, the conservative nannys are at it again. Obesity as a moral crusade.

Poor Dr. Meldrum just doesn't get it. The vast (excuse the pun) majority of overweight people got overweight by not addressing their problem, which is that they take in more calories than they burn. But they were not addressing their problem before they got the pills, and if you take the pills away, they are still not gonna address the problem.

There are two problems here. One is the personal problems of the obese (back pain, leg pain, heart disease, diabetes, their clothes don't fit, discrimination, etc). The other is that of society, which has to accept the increased health insurance premiums due to coverage of obese people who have to be treated for back pain, leg pain, heart disease and diabetes. If there is a pill that can mitigate any or all of these problems, I say get over yourself Meldrum, and give the fatties what they want. Is it a simplistic solution to the problem of lack of self-discipline? You bet! Does it work? Often. Is society better off treating obesity? Yep.
Metabolism also has an impact on this.
I am big-boned dammit!

Yes, Let Them Eat Cake, er um, PILLS! Pills for everyone!!!

Really? Call Oprah because she's ready to pay you a boat-load of money for one that does.
I see. We're back to "the pill" issue. I think I stated my case quite clearly prior.
"Call Oprah because she's ready to pay you a boat-load of money for one that does."

Uh, Trina, I guess you weren't paying attention, because Oprah already paid a boat-load of money, lost a lot of weight, and then regained much of it.

As one who has never had a body mass index over 23, I can tell you that the best answer to obesity is "no pain, no gain." But if pills work for fatties and if fatties on pills keep my insurance rates down, I'm all for it.

Hmmm. I guess them magic pills don't work quite as often as you thought.

If pills are the answer to lower insurance rates, then we should all expect our rates to just melt away any day now.

Are you sure you've never tried steroids? I hear the shots can be painful. Sounds like someone might need an anti-depressant. Better yet, an ego-suppressant.
