Dropping of my little one for his first day of first grade yesterday at Glenwood, I noticed his teacher has a nose piercing. I am wondering what the school system's policy is on body/facial piercings. I am shocked to say the least! Any suggestions?
I would call your school board member and see if there is such a policy.
I'll just take a wild guess (won't even look in my crystal ball) and wager that the piercing was not there when she hired in. Any takers?
I am sorry Merlin, your guess is wrong. I know the teacher in question and she had the nose "diamond" when she hired in. The teacher also works as a coach for the High School. In the three years she has been a teacher for Oak Ridge, I have never seen her without it. Nose ring aside, she is a good teacher.
Just for curiosity sake, would a teacher with a tattoo that was visible be an issue also?
I'm glad my kids are out of public school.
...and yes I wouldn't be happy with my child having a teacher with a ring through her/his nose (or anything else that my little darling can see). Call me close minded.
Not having memorized the
policy manual, I looked it up. Section IV deals with policies for professional staff, and I didn't find anything about tattoos or piercings.
Personally, I find facial and body piercings distasteful. Not crazy about tattoos (at least the ones that show), either. However, we don't have a policy to the contrary.
A visible tattoo would bother me as well. If children see this as being acceptable as they grow up, then they will believe it is acceptable for them as well. Not saying that we should judge, but everyone knows that you can't work for many professional businesses having exposed nose rings and tattoos and that is the danger of this situation. This teacher is setting an example for our children and just because the Oak Ridge schools thinks it is okay, not every professional setting in our culture views it the same way.
"However, we don't have a policy to the contrary."
Don't mean to be disagreeable, but why don't we? Either that means that "we" don't care that a teacher has a tattoo/piercing on her face, or it hasn't come up yet.
Now it has.
Also, what is the school's policy on body piercing/visible tattoos on students?
We probably did not think one was necessary. I would think common sense would tell the professional that this is unacceptable but then I am from a completely different generation.
