I need to vent. Just Me mentioned in another thread that there was a pro-life and pro-choice booth at the festival this weekend. Do we really need to be exposed to this at a Secret City festival? I had a friend walking his 9 year old daughter by the pro-life booth and was accosted by a rabid supporter who tried to give his daughter an eleven week old fetus, to have for her very own. Disgusting!!! What are they thinking? Why in the world would anyone, especially a young girl, want a toy fetus? He told me he was relieved that his daughter declined and continued hurriedly away from the booth. Had she accepted, he said it would have ended up as a surprise in someone's cocktail before he would allow her to have a plastic fetus.
Secondly, Just-Me would you please quit labeling pro-choice as pro-abortion? Never in my life have I ever known someone who is pro-abortion, and by labeling someone who believes in having a choice as pro-abortion is offensive, to say the least.
Maybe the city should reconsider allowing either side to have a booth. I would rather educate my children on my own terms, then have to explain how the fetus got there in the first place because of a gift from the pro-life booth.
Witchypoo:
Way to fire. JustMe, I have no idea if you are male or female. If male, what gives you the right to chastize choices women make. It is not about pro-abortion it is about a woman having the right to make her own decisions about her body. Maybe woman should be allowed to tell men what to do with their privates. I am not trying to open up pandora's box here, just stand up for women's rights.
No Just Me, you are wrong. I can be pro-life and still believe in the right for women to choose. You do not get to decide what I believe in. And for now, the government is on my side.
A second question to ponder: Why are the pro-lifers able to hand out these plastic fetus's at a city run festival? Before a child can take a sex ed course in public schools the parent an/or guardian must sign a consent form. Their posters and handing out material are far more graphic than anything I have seen in school, and this is a city tax funded expense. I do agree that other than this booth, the festival was fabulous and I encourage the city to continue. I bet whatever the city donated was paid back in spades with hotel taxes, local food vendors, etc. making extra dollars on the tourism.
What about the rights of all the future women that are aborted? Do they have any rights? So you don't think that men should be able to be in favor of putting women who kill their 6 year olds? The whole point is that there are at least two other people involved - the father and the baby.
Also, please explain how the "women right to make her own decisions about her body" doesn't mean she has a right to be a prostitute and sell her body?
ROFLMAO!!
Is it a full moon?
As I said I did not want to open pandora's box. I will leave this subject with this thought. Until you walk in someone's shoes you should not criticize. It appears you are a male and do not have a uterus so you will never walk in those shoes and know what these women are facing. Most women will chose to carry the fetus but IT IS their choice. The majority of women do not want to have to make that choice but life throws curve balls and you either learn to hit it or stand there and watch it go by and strike out. Life gives people hard decisions to make and unless you walk in their shoes you do not have the right to question THEIR decision. It is their's to make. When it is yours, make the decision that is right for you. It is all about choices and the right to make them.
You are either for abortion or you are not...
Not true. You are either for the option of safe, legal abortion, or you are not.
If the booth-workers for controversial issues cannot stay within the bounds of their booths and refrain from accosting people who are uninterested in their information, they should not be permitted at our festival.
If I had a vote, I would suggest that the Secret City festival ban any political activity in the future. Not the place for it. What do politics have to do with what the festival is celebrating anyway?
Be careful about your grouping, AW. I do support your right to bear arms (within reason... I don't think you need to go packin' to the local watering hole), and I support the right of parents to send their kids to private school, or to home school them (so long as they actually DO it).
Life is not black and white. It's even way beyond shades of gray, and it's a darn shame that some people won't let themselves see the rainbow.
I just find it interesting that the same group of people that believe in a woman's right to choose (even if that means killing another living being)
Since there is a federal law that mandates the aborted fetuses must receive appropriate medical attention, it seems that the act is more about setting "another living being" free to live its life on its own. Since about 90% of abortions (this is after the almost 90% caused by the "hand of God" also know as "failure to implant") occur in the first 12 weeks, that means we are just moving its birth date up by 6 months or more.
Almost no abortions are for the safety of the mother,
Quite the contrary. The danger of abortion is a fraction of that of giving birth. Abortion is always an improvement in safety for the woman.
Of course the politically incorrect reality is that the millions of abortions have resulted in a lower crime rate. Unfortunately, the future doctor that was going to discover the cure for cancer may have also been aborted.
Funny, as you point out what really happens is a reduction in gang-bangers. That cancer researcher would more likely be trained and on the verge of great things when gunned down by a crack head.
What I think we can all agree to is that abortions should be minimized. And that starts with results based sex education which allow more kids to make informed, responsible choices for themselves throughout their lives.
My personal feeling is that everyone ought to be somehow temporarily sterilized until they are about 25 years old
I must admire you on this. Not many people have the guts to take such a radical stand.
