Starting February 4th, the city has announced that 5 new crossing guards will begin working the following areas:

(2) Illinois and ORTP
(1) Robertsville and Illinois Ave
(1) Jefferson Ave and Robertsville Rd
(1) Fairbanks- for Jefferson

You'll most likely see them sometime between the hours of 7:00a.m.-8:30a.m. M-F, and in the afternoons 2:30-3:30p.m. except Wednesdays which would likely be between 12:30-2:00.

I would like to encourage everyone to consider not only acknowledging them when passing by, but also going the extra mile to let them know how much they are appreciated. Take them some coffee, donuts, a thank you card, whatever you can think of. Maybe even brainstorm and coordinate here to spread it out. They'll need our continued support beyond the initial weeks and months to come.

And THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who applied, inquired, and/or got the job!!!!!!
Just another means of pandering to the wants of a few. Why don't you people get a life and take responsibility for your own actions. Stop trying to make it look as if it is the fault of others
Packrat, do I understand you to believe that ensuring children can get to school and leave school safely is a "want of the few"? Surely that's not what you meant to post!

Many of us realize there is a behind the scenes, quiet group in OR that thinks "to each his own", those kids are not "MY problem", "GOOD parents pick their kids up in the gas guzzling SUV" ect.

Yes, in one sense parents should be held accountable for their kids getting to and from school. But if we are REALISTIC and honest, we know that many children for a host of different reasons (bus service denied, both parents have to work to put food on the table, single parents, work schedules, car issues, neglect, ect) need their community to provide reasonable safe crossing to/from school because they don't have a traditional stay-at-home mommy to pick up at the school door.

It is not the fault of the child that his/her mommy can't stay home in order to be in the pick-up brigade at dismissal. It is not the fault of the child that his/her school board took away the bus option, and it is not the child's fault that until recently they had to play "chicken" crossing the street.

As I have posted before, other counties around us seem to have figured out how to ensure kids can cross the street from school safely. What is our problem?

If we love and care about ALL OF OUR OR kids (not just the "Rivers Run, Rariety" crowd, but the Willowbrook and apartment kids too, their safety comes first. BEFORE test scores, medals, rankings ect. They are the future of this city. If we care about OR, we will care about them.

You should keep in mind Kermit, that packrat is one of those individuals full of hostility and anger who enjoys lashing out at "whatever." It is best to just ignore someone like that and they will just fade away, hopefully, to "that other" forum where "it" will be in good company with MC and ORX~smile~

Just my opinion!
I hear you KR... Packrat's post was just too unbelievably callous to remain unchallenged.
I worry that people are focusing on their annoyance/anger at Trina and others who are outspoken about this at the expense of the kids. The safety of ALL OR students is the issue in my eyes. Not what OR folks like/don't like about Trina and co.

"It's not easy being green."
Hey Kermit and Knightrider: i am so sorry i didn't see it you way . I didn't vote for Hillary as i am sure you both did.

Get a life
Packrat....go chew on something else. You are being extremely insensitive and obviously you don't have a dog in this race.
Now this is what a town who cares about its kids looks like!!!!!!!

Keep it up Oak Ridgers!
That was a wonderful letter. Thanks to everyone who has taken a moment or two to express appreciation to our crossing guards -- if they feel our gratitude, maybe we can keep these good folks.
I'm just wondering the reason behind the crossing guard at the Turnpike and Illionois when kids that would cross that way are now riding buses. Just seems like a complete waste of resources. I get why we would have one at the high school, it's smart and proactive instead of reactive but the guy at llionois and the turnpike just seems like a complete waste of money.

No attacks please just genuinely looking at figuring out a good reason for this.
