The Tennessean carries a story this morning about likely topics in the State Legislature, set to convene in just under two weeks.

Another article details efforts to spend excess lottery funds (which are constitutionally restricted): some want to lower the GPA standard for poor students and raise it for all others, while others want to spend the surplus on capital projects for local school systems.

It's also an election year, which means that they'll want to finish up "on time" (meaning April) so those up for election can begin raising money again (they cannot accept campaign contributions during the legislative session) and campaign at home.

There's a lot to do, and very little time. Tax receipts are down, so there's not much money to work with, either. What do you think the priorities should be?

Making correct revenue projections, and spending no one time money to get us through a tough spot based on a faltering economy. Finally, solving the problems a revenue stream dependent upon a source of funding subject to down turns in the economy and consumerism that will eliminate, or greatly reduce, the revenue shortfalls the State tends to have to deal with in about a seven year cycle.
