I remember a conversation I had about 2 years ago with an aquaintance who works in an eye doctor's office (the kind of eye doctor who does surgery including Lasik, etc.). She'd had the type of corrective surgery that was done before Lasik became available (don't remember what it was called). Like Lasik, it involved making the slits in the cornea to reshape it to correct the vision. Her advice? "Don't mess with your eyes."
Her surgery was a success and I don't think she would tell anyone not to have it. But I believe she felt the way she did because the effects of the surgery usually aren't permanent. In other words, the effects will last several years but eventually the patient will typically have to repeat the surgery somewhere down the road. She wasn't questioning the safety or efficacy of the procedure, just that she wasn't sure if it was beneficial overall.
You will have to weigh the benefits vs. the risks for yourself. And asking questions is a great way to start. Good luck!
