Did anybody see the
article today about the Mayor's proposal for planning? It sounds pretty interesting and it might even be fun! Does anybody know more about it?
The Mayor has been through the Vision process before, and took several players to Covington Kentucky( Where I believe he was a previous Mayor) and showed them how it works. In the near future, the public will be able to give their input on how they think the future of our City should progress. This will probably be done in a series of public forums, work sessions etc. After all input is collected, a Vision plan of sorts will be put to the test. I will seek to see a further "Greening" of our city, from top to bottom.
I love the idea - but I hope we learn from the 9 Counties/1 Vision effort. I can't say that I know much about 9C1V, but, as I recall, a lot was put into it with little-to-no real payoff in the end.
If appropriately thought out and planned before implementing, hopefully, we could avoid the same pitfalls. We certainly can't afford to waste any more time or money on ill-planned projects.
The overview of the Covington plan is
here and the details are
here. It looks like they targeted 9 areas for action and then picked goals for each area, strategies for meeting these goals and action plans for implementation.
Their plan chose these areas for focus:
- Housing and Neighborhoods
- Arts and Culture
- Preservation
- Education
- Downtown
- Greenspace
- Safety
- Transportation
- Rivers
Where do you think we should place our attention for planning in Oak Ridge?
Well since you asked CN...
1) Safety (increased police protection)
2) Housing and Neighborhoods
3) Downtown
4) Preservation
5) Greenspace
6) Education
7) Arts and Culture
8) Rivers
9)Transportation
I know I'll hear about this prioritized list, but I think that Mayor Beehan is an innovator, and I'm excited about the possibilities from this plan.

You forgot the Senior Center.
According to the article, the citizens get to pick the topics. I'm not sure that the Covington list needs to match ours. Roughly there will be a lot of overlap, but there should be some uniqueness too. For example, their riverfront is the center of their downtown. Ours is more of a recreation use and a revenue source from attendees at events. We also have a real need for retail development and I suspect that the zoning process will be top of a lot of lists.
The bottom line from what I can see is that we are ready to move from a strategic plan to citizen involved continuous planning. If everybody gets excited about this, these changes will be big.
"You forgot the Senior Center."
Nope...I didn't.

There's certainly some significant enthusiasm for this process among the people who visited Covington to see what they've done. I'm willing to give it a chance, but will be really disappointed if it ends up being yet another study collecting dust on the shelves of City Hall.
Actually this may be an excellent opportunity to find out that most citizens don't want to fund a senior center.
