Found this to be rather interesting....
The op-ed piece from today’s Oak Ridger ends with the following two paragraphs:
“Perhaps the biggest question that needs to be asked is how did Coach Stevens find himself in this situation to begin with. As members of the two teams — and their coaches — were shaking hands after what has often been recognized as one of the most emotional games either team plays during their respective seasons, why were students and others allowed to wander on to Blankenship Field in the first place?
We are certain that school authorities will put their heads together and ultimately piece together what occurred last week on Blankenship Field, but we believe it is much more important to ensure that everything that can be done will be done to prevent coaches or players from finding themselves in this sort of a situation in the future.”
Here’s the comments (so far) left on the Oak Ridger’s web-site :
1. Good question. Why were students allowed on the field after the game? And where was security? How many police officers were on hand, especially for a crowd this large. Why didn't Stevens just lead his team off the field instead of playing grounds crew official worried that sacred Blankenship Field would be damaged? What the heck would a mob of fans do to the field that a football game didn't cause? Any more questions?
2. For your information the CHS parents and students were given permission to be on the field. (hj)
3. They were given permission by which Oak Ridge Schools representative ? (RG)
4. Our man Mr. Davis gave us permissionand that's all we needed. We won the game, got cheated at the end and we went on the field, nobody could have stopped us. (Dragon)
5. The clinton athletic director got permission from the oak ridge principal and athletic director as soon as the game ended to allow the students and the parents on the field after the game. Coach Stevens was unaware of the situation and exploded on the students immaturely, which was uncalled for, and acted irresponsibly regarding the language and physical actions that were used. (Clinton)
6. IYHO (Fan)
7. There were 7 police officers working security for the game, hardly adequate for a crowd that size. Alledgely, rumor was the Clinton fans were going to attempt to tear down the goal posts.
I wonder if #2 - #5 are true?
