Looks like we messed around too long and the soft economy has scratched about half of the stores to be build in 2009. See the link for today only in the Oak Ridger.
I asked someone very much "in the know" whether Target would have come if the referendum had passed, and the answer was yes. A few months and a few million make all the difference in town.

Has anyone else noticed the several large areas being graded along Pellissippi? Any idea what's going in there (except would-be Oak Ridge sales tax dollars)?
Don't agree NM.... Someone "in the know" is Monday morning quarterbacking. Sounds like sour grapes to me.
Except that this conversation took place last week, before it made the paper.
Those who chose to vote on the issue spoke loud and clear. Let's let it go and move on.
While I disagree strongly with what their vote told us, you are right KR. They spoke loudly indeed.
That is exactly what worries me about our future. Those that want to stifle much needed economic growth don't mind one bit spending hundreds of thousands on a club house for the geriatric set. An "investment" that would continue to cost Oak Ridge taxpayers large sums of money each and every year, with no measurable return. Yet scream against projects that have been proven to have potential for strong financial return.

...and hell yes...that is sour grapes.
Yes, the volume is turned up and I don't see how those who oppose government expenditure when there is a clear social benefit can hope to get a Senior Center where any social benefit is only for a narrow segment without that being pointed out. For example, their wish to acquire the Paragon building is essentially a permanent, 100% tax abatement since that property would be taken off of the tax rolls. And that is in addition to the 100% government expense without compensation. In summary, the Senior Center would cost us more than Crest Pointe would have and we still do not have a solution to our tax balance problem and dearth of shopping opportunities.

As for the Target timing, I am not sure that had the referendum passed, we would be far enough into the project to not be affected by the soft economy. I think it is true that the referendum itself killed the ability of Target to come into our community at this time. The Monday property will continue to be a polluted wetland, Parcel-A will continue to be a source of silt released into the Clinch River, and Pine Ridge will continue to be more like a strip mine in the middle of town until Dr Revis makes additional plans to develop that property. Isn't it interesting that a referendum mainly crafted to prevent Dr Revis from making money on that property results in our future being in his hands, at his whim.
Now there you go again Daco.. Blaming the ole folks for everything.

They are not against progress. Remember that they were the ones who overwhelmingly voted for the "new" high school. But I might add that most of them have been around the block a few times and are well aware that "no deal" is better than a "bad deal"

I am all for helping bring in whatever will increase our revenue, even a "gasp", auto parts plant or asphalt plant but I am not for giving away the store to get them.

Crestpointe was a classic example of a greedy developer trying to sock it to us and the city fell for it hook, line and sinker. If ANYONE wants to build there I say "have at it". Yes, give them a 50% tax abatement if need be. Most of us ole folks will agree to that.

And that's my last comment on that. ~smile~
Let's just turn the Monday property into a huge swimming hole surrounded by a couple of new buildings (of course we'll have to relocate those at the city services buidling, tear that down and rebuild) put in plush carpet, new dance floors and disco balls.

Double our taxes, chase off what's left of the police department and let the drug dealers tell us how they want us to spend the money.

Since we don't want anyone to move into our community, let's put the guard stations back in order and charge a dollar to get out!

Oh yeah, we should have a slaughter house on top of the ridge too! That'll keep 'em from wanting to buy here.

Please forgive my adding this link to that other forum, but I find it rather like slowly driving past a horrible traffic accident…mouth agape, eyes wide open, seeing but not believing. I’m shocked that there are people that actually consider themselves adults that would revel in the defeat of the best proposal in years to help with our slow but certain economic demise.
