Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN 9th) faced a tough time with a group of black Baptist ministers in Memphis recently.

It seems that for some, it's not a question of whether he's liberal enough, but whether he's black enough:

Quote:
The Rev. Robert Poindexter of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church was one of the dissenters, saying of Cohen, “He’s not black, and he can’t represent me, that’s just the bottom line.

Reading through the article, I caught myself feeling some sympathy for Cohen until the last paragraph:

Quote:
Cohen, who is Jewish, called the criticism a thinly veiled plot to undermine his reputation and attributed it to a group of extremists. He said that a national network of activists is working behind the scenes to create division within the Democratic Party.

“The ayatollahs of America have struck in Memphis,” Cohen said in a phone interview. “They’re a coalition of right-wing Republicans who don’t believe in the separation of church and state.”

Cohen's lost his mind.
